Situated in the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo, Goma city, while not a very well-known travel destination, is nevertheless an interesting place. Air Africa budget flights to Goma help you put this African city on you travel list. Goma is most recognized and dominated by the Nyiragongo volcano. The last eruption of this volcano happened in 2002. Goma up until then was considered quite a wealthy town with its location along the north shore of Lake Kivu. Nowadays the most interesting thing to see is the effects of the lava flow on this city as you walk along the lakeside and see how the landscape has been affected. Even the airport has a section that was affected by the lava flow while luckily leaving the planes and airstrip undamaged. You can also see the remnants of the former residence of the president which was hit badly by the volcano. Despite these setbacks the city is trying to slowly go back to the affluence it enjoyed in the early 90s. The tourist industry is very slowly trying to re-emerge.

Be surrounded by natural beauty

If you do take the plunge and visit Goma then you will be pleasantly surprised by its natural beauty and culture. Goma is surrounded by the Virunga Mountains and as a result has an uncanny resemblance to the alpine lakes in Europe. There are two UNESCO World Heritage Sites, the Virunga National Park and the Kahuzi-Biega National Park outside of Bukavu. The Virunga Park which covers a span of lowland plains to the Rwenzori Mountains is home to a massive concentration of hippos. Kahuzi-Biega is home to the last troop of eastern lowland gorillas which is a subspecies of those indigenous to the country. When eating out in Goma you will find that the food is usually accompanied with large quantities of mayonnaise. Be it from salads, to fried plantains, to meat, fish or even peas, mayo plays a large role. This is also usually accompanied by a delicious and spicy pepper sauce called peri peri. This love of mayo has been attributed to its Belgian legacy.
