Formerly known as Elisabethville, Lubumbashi as it is now known is the second largest city in the Democratic Republic of Congo. It is second in size only to the capital Kinshasa. Lubumbashi is the mining capital of the city and houses many of the countrys biggest mining companies and so plays a pivotal role in the Congo. The Cathedral of St Pierre et Paul, the Palace of Justice and the Grand Hotel located within the city all showcase the colonial heritage and history of Lubumbashi. No trip to Africa would be complete without taking in the beautiful surroundings so make sure to visit the Kundelungu National Park which also has one of the tallest waterfalls in Africa, Lofoi. Try and organize to set up camp there and spend some time in this spectacular location. Other waterfalls to be found in the Park are Lutshipuka and Masansa. A visit to this Park will help towards taking it back to its former glory, a project that is being handled by the Frankfurt Zoological Society. You may even see one of the few remaining elephants, zebras or antelope for your efforts. The tomb of Chief Msiri and the Belgium Lieutenant who shot him can be found about a 3km drive away from Lubumbashi.
