Massawa is situated beside the Dahlak Archipelago in the Red Sea at the northern point of Gulf of Zula. This is one of the important coastal cities of Eritrea which was ruled by many emperors and countries. Later in 1991 it was given independence from the last rulers of Ethiopia. During late 1800s Massawa was the capital of the Italian Colony of Eritrea. In antiquity it was just a small seaside village where later due to various invasions of the foreigners it sooner became an important port city in red Sea.
