Despite its industrial influence there are interesting heritage places to visit such as prehistoric cave paintings, the largest mosque in the city which is of Italian influence and the St. Michels Catholic Church which is said to be over 115 years. Browse the interesting traditional markets such Kefira and Ashawa where there are interesting stalls to see. Twice a year in the nearby city of Kulubi, about an hour from Dire Dawa, a religious festival is held where people gather to enjoy a variety of small stalls that sell items ranging from sugar cane to clothes. It is held for three days. The residents chew on a type of leaved called chat which has narcotic properties. This they tend to enjoy with coffee for a relaxing afternoon.
