The Emperor Fasilides founded Gondar in 1635 as a royal stronghold, and it grew and prospered as a market and agricultural township. Following what was undoubtedly divine guidance, the Emperor built his capital city here and his castle rose on the exact site where he was led to. Seven churches were also built in the surrounding area by Emperor Fasilides and his successors followed in his footsteps and erected their own castles in the city, which led to its current moniker of the impressive Camelot of Africa.
