Jimma, also sometimes written as Jima, is a buzzing city in Ethiopia and is the largest city in the southwestern region of the country. It is an interesting city to visit not so much for its sights but more for the genuineness of the place. The place was once a successful thriving kingdom the evidence of which is still visible today through some of the buildings. This includes the Palace of Abba Jifar. The city was once considered as the greatest market in all of southwest Ethiopia. Air Africa has cheap flights to Jimma which means that it now an accessible travel destination for all travelers. In Jimma you will find the Jimma University, the airport and a museum. There are also several markets and the Jimma Research Centre which is the national centre researching ways to improve the produce of coffee and spices.

Get to the core

In Jimma history King Jiffar was one of the most influential Kafa Kingdom rulers and his palace is well worth a visit. It is situated on a hill 7km from the town centre. The Kings tomb lies further down the hill. You will be able to see the private rooms, the throne room, library, the courthouse, guesthouse and the throne room. The family mosque located here is still in use today. The museum has some very interesting odds and ends on display which include a royal portable toilet. Despite not having much in the form of interesting sights Jmma does have interesting cafes and restaurants for you to spend some time in. Try an Ethiopian dish called firfir for a culinary adventure. You can enjoy a cool drink and some good food be it snacks or proper dining. Further east about 5km from the town you will find a dam which offers some good bird watching for a few hours of entertainment. You will be surprised by the lush greenness of the area as well as the friendliness of the people. It is not a location for those looking for luxury and pampering. Jimma is more for seasoned travellers looking to understand and experience the core nature of a country.
