Island City Antananarivo

Founded in the 1600s Antananarivo is Madagascars largest city located across 12 hills offering stunning views across the land. Situated 90 miles inland off the countrys eastern coast the city is a hub of diverse attractions. Not predominantly African in nature and surroundings, Tana comprises of Asian looking inhabitants, paddy fields, ancient castles and beautiful mountains which are accessible via steep stairways dug into the sides.
Antananarivo also has a problem with pollution so be mindful of where you dine. The city is serviced by buses and rather shabby taxis. Buses are crowded mini-vans and some taxis are shared. Therefore opt for the shabby but inexpensive and private taxis or explore the city by foot. Quaint wooden houses, French colonial architecture and modern office complexes make up the city. Steep steps lead down to the Independence square and town centre.

Unique Antananarivo

Quite fascinating to explore Antananarivo comprises of little chapels, a zoo and mosque. Take a taxi up-to the Rova (17-18th century Queenss palace, damaged by fire) and explore on foot. You will notice lots of poverty, stray dogs and old buildings mingled with modern groundwork, but this is a true Tana experience.
Not to be missed is the Tsimbazaza Botanical and Zoological Park displaying an impressive collection of Madagascars lush flora and fauna. Not forgetting the furry Lemurs which the island is synonymous for.
Visit the Zoma local markets where you can browse for some authentic souvenirs, remember to bargain for the best price. If trying out Malagasy food the open-air markets offer variety however the upmarket local restaurants are a safer choice.
