Meaning large port in French, Grand Port is on the east island in Mauritius. Mahebourg which is the main town in the Grand Port area was initially built by the Dutch but was later taken over by the French. As a result this acts as a constant reminder of the islands colonial past. Grand Port is the first port of Mauritius. These guided excursions allow visitors to trek through rare native rainforests filled with meandering streams and rock pools for swimming. Certain areas have been closed off to visitors to maintain its untouched quality for the animals such as the Java deer, wild boar, monkeys and a variety of birds. Make sure to visit the museum and take in the artifacts exhibition and the visitor centre as well as to walk around the tropical garden. Take an evening stroll around Mahebourgs lovely waterfront with convenient benches located all around, for people to just sit, relax and reflect.

Also be sure to sample the rich and tasty Mauritian cuisine that reflects its past with a mix of cultural influences.
