Described as the place where the east African savannah meets the West African jungle, Uganda the landlocked country lies within the Nile basin. Unknown to most, this East African country has much to offer visitors with safaris that cover both forests and vast plains. The official language is English with other languages including Swhahili and Luganda being spoken. Since gaining independence in 1962 the country has been dealing with internal issues. However, it is slowly building its tourist industry as it offers adventures through rainforests, tropical channels, and leading up to majestic and misty mountains. With Air Africa low cost flights to Uganda it is easy to make this diverse and interesting country an accessible holiday destination.

A growth in eco tourism

Uganda is building its industry on the concept of eco tourism so as to empower the local communities. This is by promoting the natural and cultural attractions that the country has an abundance of. The National Forest Authority plus other government sectors help manage and maintain the Ugandan forests, many of which are open to visitors. It is worth taking in as many of these as possible so as to enhance your whole Uganda experience. Some of the forest reserves include the Mabira Central Forest Reserve, the Lutoboka, Kampala and Bunjazi Central Forest Reserves, all of which showcase the countrys biodiversity to perfection. A national park worth visiting while in Uganda is Bwindi, referred to as the Impenetrable Forest. It is a newly created national park and is the said to be one of the last remaining habitats of the mountain gorilla. The park is also home to elephants, monkeys and rare giant forest hogs among others.

White water rafting and Ugandan cuisine

While in Uganda also be sure to visit the Nyero Rock paintings, which is a site with a three tired rock shelter. It has primitive paintings the source of which cannot be traced. However, the site has been set as the Later Iron Age period while the paintings are appreciated for their aesthetic value. For more strenuous activities try white water rafting along the upper stretch of the Nile, considered as one of the worlds best white water rafting locations. Rafting on this part of the Nile is an intense and exhilarating experience that is never forgotten. If you are travelling with kids and rafting is not an option then try a family float trip which avoids the bigger waves yet provides the kids with an exciting experience. Once all the activities are done sample some of the Ugandan cuisine on offer. As with most countries, that were once colonized, Uganda too has a mix of different cuisines incorporated into its traditional cooking. Asian, Indian, English and Italian are just some of the influences on the countrys dishes. So hurry and look for last minute flights to Uganda on Air Africa and enjoy an experience of a lifetime.
